WHAT DO YOU DO??
Posted by
Lady D
Over the weekend I had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful Naturalites and one lady in particular told me that she experiences hair breakage/thinning when she does twists or braids. *faint* Now we know those are MUST DOs in our world. How can we survive without them?? I was definitely shocked to say the least.
Here are some suggestions I put together to help combat breakage/thinning while you're styling:
Here are some suggestions I put together to help combat breakage/thinning while you're styling:
- Take Biotin and Vitamin E supplements. Both biotin and Vitamin E help maintain strong, healthy hair, which can help prevent the hair from weakening and falling out. (I take GNC's Women's Ultra Nourish-Hair)
- Drink a lot of water and eat fruits and vegetables. This will help ensure that toxins are not building up on your skin and clogging hair follicles.
- Use an organic shampoo. There's also a Biotin Shampoo (found at GNC as well).
- Increase your protein intake. Hair is made of protein, and needs protein in order to rebuild itself. Try and do a protein treatment once a month, it works WONDERS!
- Rub olive oil into your scalp. Olive oil helps unclog hair follicles, allowing more hair to grow.
- Massage your scalp to increase circulation. Decreased circulation in your scalp can contribute to thinning hair.
- Use a hair thickening conditioner for thinning hair. This widens the shafts of your hair, making your hair appear thicker.
- Do not blow dry your hair. The heat will weaken your hair, and when you brush your hair out it is more likely to fall out. If you must blow dry your hair, use the cool setting on the hair dryer.
- After a shower, comb your hair out while it is still wet. Hair is more elastic when it is wet. Don't let your hair dry with knots in it.
We must use protective styling techniques...HAPPY STYLING!

WRAP A LOC

Lady D
For all my sisters with Locs (and us Naturalites) who love CURLS.......BEHOLD the MUST-HAVE Loc Tool: WRAP-A-LOC
I always wondered how people got their Locs so curly and now I know! (one of their secrets at least) They come in a variety of sizes for Traditional Locs and Sisterlocks and 20 to a pack, so you might not even need to buy a bundle like I did for those wretched yet wonderful Flexi Rods.
Here's a video that gives you all the deets because I was just so curious about these things.
or you can check out their Site where you can also get an Instructional DVD.

PJ FIX: CANTU LEAVE IN REPAIR CREAM
Posted by
Lady D
I saw that my ends were starting to fray so after my trim I started using this stuff. I used a little every other day, the jury's still out on whether or not it works due to my twists, but here's to hoping (I still use it even with my twists). I'm a big fan of Cantu products in general and would be sorely disappointed if this repair cream let me down. I will say...it is a little on the greasy side :( but overall it does make my hair SLIGHTLY softer, not as soft as I'd like, but it's manageable. Oh and I loooove the smell...I don't know what it is about me and product smells, but man...I just can't help myself. Anyways, try it out for yourself and let us know what you think... **shameless plug for comments**

COLOR AND NATURAL HAIR
Posted by
Lady D
I was having a discussion with the boo about getting color for my birthday *SMILES* and he said "Isn't that less Natural because you're adding a chemical?" I said that's an interesting question because I think that's a common struggle with Naturalites. Are you really Natural if you color your hair? My thoughts are yes. I'm not changing the texture of my hair and I consider color an enhancement, just like weave, make up, etc... So I still consider myself just as Natural with color or without color.
What are your thoughts?? Can you have color and still be considered Natural?

I have bought this product several times now, and use it daily after shampooing and conditioning my hair, which tends to be dry during the winter months. It helps improve the texture of my hair without leaving it oily-looking, and has a pleasant, very light scent.
I like this stuff. It smells nice. My hair doesn't feel heavy. It's very soft. I really use it to help me comb out tangles when I get out of the shower, my hair is pretty fine, no volume, so it really help it's to keep looking healthy.
This leave-in conditioner makes my hair feel like silk. Just be careful not to spray too much. I spray once or twice on each side and once in the back and have shoulder-length straight hair. I love it.

I *HEART* THE KIDS
Posted by
Lady D
I am anti children under the age of 16 getting relaxers. I cannot imagine what it would be like to get a relaxer at 6 or 7 years old, since I as a grown woman HATED getting them. I give props to all my mothers and others out there who have not succumb their child to the 'Creamy Crack.'
I came across this little book of natural hair styles for our babies and thought it would be a good idea to pass the word. It gives step-by-step instructions and pictures for how to do the styles and think it would be a good investment for any mother, sister, aunt, cousin, BASICALLY ANYONE with an au naturale kiddie. My sister will be turning 7 soon and I think I'll be giving this book to my stepmom just so she won't fall into the 'Creamy Crack' spell. We've got to teach them to be PROUD of their hair, no matter what texture.
I hope you enjoy the book, maybe you can even use it as bonding time by choosing a style together :)
And as an added bonus, check out
